Approved Driving Instructor Training Part 2 – Driving Ability
Driving Instructor Training for the part 2 exam is typically around 20 hours of tuition taken over 5 days.
Training typically comprises -
- Eyesight check
- Initial driving skills assessment
- MSM/PSL/ADA routine development
- One to one in car tuition
- Q&A de-brief between lessons
- Advanced observation skills
- Preparation for the part 2 test

Approved Driving Instructor Training Part 3 – Teaching Ability
Driving Instructor Training for the part 3 exam is range upward from around 25 hours of tuition taken over 6 days, to 40 hours and beyond. Since Part 3 is more about transferring skills to the pupil, there will be additional time spent on ‘classroom’ tuition, and the time spent in the car is often spent with the instructor acting as pupil in various role playing scenarios. Additional training is often a high priority with ‘last chance’ trainees who have already had two failures in the exam.
Training typically comprises -
- Identification, analysis and remedial action for pupil driving faults
- Instructional Techniques, including tailoring your instruction to the pupil’s needs,
- Attitude & Approach - creating, establishing and maintaining an effective learning environment
- planning and how and when to give instruction
- communication skills – how to deliver it effectively in a way the pupil understands responds to, being able to ask or answer the right question at the right time providing feedback and encouragement to promote learning development, and knowing when to praise and when to point out faults
- Use of Controls - knowing when, why and what actions to take after using them
- how to stay in control of the lesson, the pupil and the car.
